What I make

This composition about the piginisation of English and Chinese features a “sanmingzhi”. The photograph was taken at Art Atrium in 2022

One of the ways migrants tend to express their cultures is through their cuisine. Over the past five years, I have been investigating how migration has influenced the development of palettes and vocabularies. I have also been exploring how being unable to eat certain foods also precludes membership to communities.

Intolerance is an artwork that was commissioned for the exhibition Precision. It was curated by Stephanie Lindquist and Minqi Gu, for Brisbane Art and Design 2023. The title refers to my atopy, which has left me unable to consume most foods. The layout could resemble either a banquet table or altar. The latter relates to the offering of food to deceased relatives or spirits.

dragon fruit as opposed to bee venom makes my tongue numb

Whilst the consumption of these foods is dangerous for me, not consuming the cooking of many women in the Chinese diaspora communities has led to my ostracisation.
