Template for making a horse lantern
With the Moon Festival approaching, you may like to create a papercut lantern to celebrate the Year of the Horse. This design adapts the 20th century “boneless carved paper lantern” technique from Fujian province. You may also like to place it on top of a spinning light base to capture the essence of ‘running horse lanterns’. That tradition, which had become established during the Song Dynasty, used the heat of a candle to rotate lanterns. A vent was cut into their lids. However, authentic versions of these ornaments are fire hazzards.
